Allied Media Projects (AMP )is seeking experienced, creative and visionary individuals to serve as Artists in Residency for the Detroit Future Schools program . The Detroit Future Schools Program will partner digital media artists with area teachers to design learning environments that transform students’ perception of Detroit from a place of abandonment to a thriving home. The program works at the intersection of popular education pedagogy, youth leadership development, digital media arts-infused education, and school-community interactions. The ideal candidate has a background in two or more of those areas, as well as experience teaching media arts to a wide range of learners.
*About the Artist in Residency position*
Each Resident Artist in the Detroit Future Schools Program will work collaboratively with 1-3 teachers to develop curricula that infuses digital media arts into English, Math, Science, Social Studies and other core subject areas. Artists will provide leadership and vision in media based curriculum-development with teachers and students in either Detroit, Hamtramck or Highland Park school districts. Artists will be expected to design and implement curricula that:
Meets state media and technology state standards
Employs critical pedagogy
Supports multiple learning styles
Fosters critical thinking and creative problem solving
Artists will provide 5 hours of in-class instruction in two classrooms for three 10 week sessions. S/he will be paid for 5 prep hours per week, for a total of 15 paid hours per week. The Residency will take place over 30 weeks between October 2011 and May 2012. In addition to these teaching hours, Resident Artists must commit to participate in the following paid activities:
Artist Orientation: August 18
Teacher-Artist Meetup: August 19
5-Day Teacher-Artist Retreat (overnight) August 20 – 24
40 hours of Artist training throughout the month of September (specific dates TBD)
*Qualifications*
The ideal candidate will have:
Demonstrated commitment to social justice values
Excellent leadership, strategic thinking and planning skills
Experience in teaching media arts
Advanced skills in one of the following digital media arts: graphic design, web design or web based media, audio, or video
Vision and Imagination. The ideal candidate holds vision for alternative and experimental educational practices and understands the richness of a creative process as an educational tool.
A grounding in community work. The ideal candidate has a background in community organizing and connections to multiple grassroots community organizations in Detroit.
Experience working in partnership. The ideal candidate excels in working in a collective non-hierarchal work environment.
Ability/desire to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends, and willingness to travel occasionally.
